Owens started researching cultural destinations earlier this year. Her original dream was to go to France, but there was a special scholarship to be given to students who were adventurous enough to go to a country that is off of the beaten tourist path. She decided on Bosnia, partly because she wanted the challenge of learning another language.
“I’d like to bring something new to them like they’re bringing something new into my life.” says Owens.
She says her family was very surprised, but supportive.
"It’s really exciting to have someone who’s such a great student and who’s willing and able to take advantage of an opportunity like this," says Karen Strossner, Owens' teacher and one of her biggest supporters.
Montanna impressed the AFS staff so much that they gave her double the amount usually awarded for this scholarship.
Owens has a blog where she shares information about her journey. You can read her words at firstname.lastname@example.org.
