They not only attended a Lego robotics competition last Saturday, but they placed 2nd and 4th place in the competition.
The teams, led by Ellen Smith's G/T teacher Shonda Smith, are part of the school's robotics club. Smith says the students really wanted to participate in the Lego competition.
"The members of the club that wanted to compete wrote an essay to explain why they should be allowed to go," Smith says. "We ended up with three teams with three members each. They trained using LEGO mind storm robotics. At the competition they competed in sumo challenges."
Each team built a robot that tried to push the opponent's robot out of the ring.
It was a great learning experience for the students.
“The competition was really fun," says 4th grader Clayton. We were all nervous if our robots would work or not. We had some trouble, but that didn’t stop us. “
