Members of the Courtway family, along with school district leaders and students and staff at Bob and Betty Courtway Middle School gathered this morning to officially celebrate the school's renaming.
The Conway School Board unanimously approved a motion to rename Bob Courtway Middle School "Bob and Betty Courtway Middle School" this past June. Betty Courtway taught Kindergarten in Conway Public Schools for 28 years.
Today's ceremony honored her as an educator and a valued member of the community she and her husband both loved.
"She was committed to education and committed to the Conway School District," said son Tom Courtway, as he addressed the crowd on behalf of his family. "It was her passion and her hope. She believed in education because education meant opportunity. Regardless of anything else, education is an equalizer."
Courtway said their family was humbled by the district's gesture to add his mother's name to the Middle School.
Principal Dr. Karen Lasker says today's ceremony gave students the chance to hear who Betty Courtway was and what kind of legacy she has set before them.
"The Courtways were "models of greatness," said Lasker. "Their pictures will hang in the front of our school as a constant reminder of what is possible if you do your best."
