Conway Public Schools' Food Services will add another school garden in their Farm to School efforts, thanks to a $500 grant from the Arkansas Community Foundation.
This money will partner with the USDA grant they were awarded in November, which will eventually place gardens throughout the district.
"The money will be used to start a school garden at a school that was not part of the original USDA Farm to School Planning grant we were awarded in November 2015," says Food Service Director Sharon Burgess. "We will use the money to purchase construction materials for a raised bed garden, as well as, soil, garden tools, seeds and plants." The Arkansas Community Foundation awards various grants for "Venture Philanthropy" projects such as this, to improve the quality of education, health and wellness, and community responsibility in our area.
"The local advisory board of the Community Foundation is excited about the work being done by the Conway Public Schools Food Service Farm to Table program. We are happy to partner with those who are bringing this innovative approach to the classroom, enabling them to add a garden at another local elementary school. The value of teaching young people to appreciate growing their own food and learning to eat healthy is immeasurable,” says Gloria Cheshier, Executive Director os the Arkansas Community Foundation.
