Reconfiguration
The district currently has a grade configuration of K-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12. The new configuration would be K-4, 5-7, 8-9, 10-12. With the completion of Phase 1 of the reconstruction of CHSW, the 10th grade class would be moved to the West campus and eighth graders would be moved to the East campus. We would then transition Ray and Phyllis Simon, Ruth Doyle, Bob Courtway, and Carl Stuart to be 5-7 buildings.
Frequently Asked Questions
If the kids get rezoned to an existing middle school, would some students have a locker vs. others not having one if they attend Ruth Doyle or Simon?
The issue of lockers has been discussed. If RDI and SI are transitioned to 5-7 schools, there would be the need for the installation of lockers for some grades. Whether 5th or 6th graders have lockers assigned in any of the four buildings has not yet been finalized.
Why would you want to put 7th grade students "in the mix" with 5th & 6th graders?
Another perspective to consider is the current placement of 7th graders with 8th graders. Developmentally, a 7th grader is much more like a 6th grader than they are an 8th grader. In the long run, 7th graders will be better served in a 5-7 setting than a 7-8 setting. In terms of the curriculum, 6th and 7th fit together better than 7th and 8th.
Are we still going to separate the kids by gender at lunch (at the new middle school level)?
That is a building administration level decision.
What elementary schools will be paired in each of the middle schools?
That decision has not been made yet. We would hope to pair two elementary schools so that there is an economic balance to the students in each middle school.
Will walk/bike ability be considered?
Certainly, whenever students can safely walk or bike to school.
Will foreign language be offered in the middle schools? Preferably in 5th?
A decision on the offering of foreign languages at earlier grade levels has not yet been finalized but will be studied.
