White House Award
Each year, the National History Day Competition allows students to present a project in one of five categories; writing a paper, formatting a website, conducting a performance, creating a documentary, or building an exhibit. Sophomore Jack Ghormley created a film that informed listeners about President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his fireside chats. With the 2019-2020 theme for this nationwide competition being “Breaking Barriers in History,” he saw this as a great opportunity to present both his love for history, and his skill in film. Ghormley spent months researching and editing each piece of this project to make it perfect and tell FDR's story successfully, with help and guidance from his teacher, Jennifer Barnett. Through his extensive research finding letters, newspaper clippings and even a personal interview with the education specialist of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum, he presented his topic in a very professional and successful manner. Throughout the year he was chosen to continue competing through both district and state levels, and once he was selected for nationals, he was ready for every challenge that he could possibly face. Ghormley was interviewed and questioned about his research and says "everything was worth it" when he was given the one White House History award presented throughout the entire competition at the virtual awards ceremony. He is now featured in the White House Historical Association podcast titled “1600 Sessions.” Ghormley admits that there were more challenges that had to be faced this year due to the complications with COVID-19 and nationals being held virtually, but overall it was a great experience that allowed his love for both film and history to grow.
