Conway JROTC Cadets Participate in Commemorative March
Cadets from Conway High School's JROTC Program traveled to Camp Robinson in North Little Rock last week to participate in the Baatan Death March Commemoration.
During World War II, 76,000 United States and Filipino soldiers were forced to surrender to Imperial Japanese forces on April 9th, 1942, after 5 months of combat without resupply or reinforcements. Following their surrender, Allied forces were forced to march 116 kilometers without food, water, or medicine from the Baatan Peninsula in the Philippine Islands to an internment camp. Along the way, 16,000 Allied soldiers died or were executed, hence the name, “Baatan Death March”.
24 Conway HS students marched 14.2 miles in remembrance of those soldiers’ sacrifice in defense of our country.
