reading interventionists

These dedicated Conway Public School District interventionists recently completed their second two-week summer course in the Take Flight program, further strengthening their expertise in supporting students with dyslexia and reading challenges. This rigorous professional learning experience includes approximately 200 hours of coursework, seminars, supervised practicum experiences, lesson demonstrations, video observations, and written assignments designed to develop deep expertise in dyslexia intervention. They will also complete four seminar days during the school year and approximately 700 hours of supervised clinical teaching as they continue progressing toward mastery of the Take Flight approach and preparation for the Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT) examination.

Throughout the training, participants engaged in study of current dyslexia research, the Science of Reading, and evidence-based instructional practices. They received intensive preparation in explicit, systematic, and multisensory language instruction designed to strengthen students’ reading and language skills. Their participation in the second year of Take Flight reflects the district’s ongoing commitment to building professional expertise and providing high-quality support for students with dyslexia.

Interventionists shared reflections on their learning, noting the impact of the training:

  • “Studying current research and evidence-based practices has helped me better understand why certain instructional methods are effective for students with dyslexia.”

  • “The multisensory techniques taught through Take Flight have given me additional tools to engage students and support their learning.”

  • “One of the most valuable aspects of the program was learning how to analyze student data and adjust instruction to meet individual needs.”

  • “The training challenged me professionally and expanded my knowledge of literacy in ways that will benefit students throughout my career.”

  • "Take Flight has equipped me with the skills and confidence to provide intensive, targeted intervention that can make a meaningful difference for struggling readers."

The Arkansas Dyslexia Support Group (ADSG), in partnership with the Arkansas State Teachers Association (ASTA), recently awarded $500 mini-grants to exceptional dyslexia interventionists across the state. These grants recognize educators who implement structured literacy interventions with fidelity and demonstrate measurable, positive outcomes for students.

Several Conway Public School District interventionists were nominated and selected to receive these prestigious awards.  They are pictured with Dr. Kathi Sweere, District Reading Specialist.
