Not only did the Conway Wampuscat Baseball team dominate on the diamond last year, but they also rose straight to the top of the classroom. In fact, the Wampuscat Baseball program officially became academic state champions by maintaining a stellar team GPA of 3.9. The team earned this prestigious honor by having the highest team average GPA in the entire state for their sport.
“I am very proud of how hard this team has worked both on and off the field,” said Head Coach Leighton Hardin. Coach Hardin holds the young men on the baseball team to a high standard to help set them up for success, “Baseball is just a game and I want these young men to be prepared for life after the game is over”.
Although Coach Hardin was ecstatic, it was the student athletes on the team that made the award possible. Through battling long nights and hard practices, the players prevailed. Their unwavering commitment to both their studies and their sport truly defined what it means to be a team.
When asked about the accomplishment, Senior Brady Bishop said, “It’s a great accomplishment and I am very proud of the team.” Bishop is at the top of the 2027 class of students with a 4.29 GPA. He has spent his high school career taking multiple AP and college courses. “It is very important to me to keep my grades up because it sets me up well for my future,” Bishop said when asked how important his grades are.
The student athletes, like the ones on the Wampus Cat Baseball team, have to balance their sport and their school. This balance can get thrown off very easily with one mess up or loss of focus. Too much of a student athlete's sports can lead to missing assignments or not being prepared enough for a test. But too much school can lower a player's play on the field due to too much stress or not being prepared to play.
Sophomore Jacob Spears has figured out how to keep his scales even, “I have to hold myself accountable,” Spears said. Spears knows that the person that can help himself the most is himself, “I have a work before play mindset.”. He went on to add, “By keeping a good balance I get to play the sport I love. When my grades slip and can’t play ball.”. Spears has a 3.9 GPA but still has a long way to go to keep that up. He says, “ I am going to work hard and stay disciplined even when school becomes hard.” Spears concluded with.
While sports and academics are a difficult challenge to balance, some student athletes have a lot more on their plate. Some are in clubs, some are in organizations, and some do community service. But for Junior Gavin Mills, he adds the task of a job to his already full plate.
“It’s really hard but I have to find a way to maintain my grades while also playing my sport and working,” Mills said when asked what it is like to be doing so much. After being asked how he keeps his grades up he said, “I have to use my time wisely at school and make sure I make time for homework or studying when I get home.”.
Even with all the pressure for the Conway Wampuscat Baseball team to perform on the diamond and in the classroom, they have found a way to pull through. They have succeeded by holding each other accountable and understanding that life after baseball might be closer than they may want it to be. But through it all, they have found a way to win and have become Academic State Champions! Every drop of sweat on the field and every hour spent studying on the bus culminated in this historic moment. They didn't just win a trophy; they proved that relentless dedication always pays off.
