7th Grade G3 Groups, advised by Mrs. Irvin, Ms. Jackson, and Ms. Miller, will be hosting a speaker series focused on options, empowerment, career paths, and service to the community—and today we kicked it off with Mrs. Jamille Thomas! Her presentation on Planning for the Future encouraged our 7th grade G3 students to think ahead, understand the difference between being rich and wealthy, and make informed spending choices.

Mrs. Thomas is a former CPSD teacher and Library Media Specialist who now serves as a real estate agent with Century 21 Sandstone Real Estate Group. She is also the Founder of Thomas Legacy Services alongside her husband and is a proud mother of two daughters, Heidy and Dani Kate.

She left our students with this powerful reminder:
“If you fail to plan for tomorrow, then tomorrow you have planned to fail.”

What a great start to our speaker series! 🪩⭐

Several of our G3 students took the time to teach multiplication and division skills to Ms. Perkins's, Ms. Neal's and Ms. St John's 4th grade students at Marguerite Vann Elementary! They did a wonderful job and the 4th graders absolutely loved it!

⭐TEACHER FEATURE #6 ⭐

Mrs. Wanamaker | 6th Grade Reading | Metaphors

I used activity 8, Metaphor, as an activity to go with “The Jacket” by Gary Soto. We created metaphors by comparing the main character, Gary, to ordinary items from the classroom. To prepare we discussed how metaphors find similarities between two unlike things. We also talked about the characteristics of the main character using the STEAL method.

As a class, we chose an item in the classroom to compare to our main character, Gary. This class chose a pencil. (Other classes chose a book, a painting, the flag and a pencil sharpener, all of which worked well!) We discussed as tables and as a whole class as we worked together to complete the first row of the chart .Students were SO excited to tell me other ideas and really loved the creative thinking involved in this activity!

Our very own Odie Phillips spoke to D3 and G3 students about his life and how he changed his direction in life through the support of people around him. He spoke responsibility and respect.

💙TEACHER FEATURE #5 💙

Mrs. Bingham | 5th Grade Reading and ELA | Decision Making

Decision-making isn’t just about choosing between A and B. It’s about critical thinking, emotional regulation, values, priorities, and the courage to take responsibility. In an age where choices come faster than ever—online, offline, in classrooms and in relationships—helping students develop sound decision-making skills is not optional. It’s essential. Nurturing analytical thinking does more than just boost students’ academic prowess; it equips them with the skills to make thoughtful, informed choices in various facets.

💙 TEACHER FEATURE #4 💙

Mrs. Masters | 5th Grade Reading | Questioning Protocols

During a recent read-aloud of Crash, students engaged in purposeful questioning to deepen their understanding of the text. As we read, students paid close attention to the questions that naturally arose, helping them remain focused and actively engaged in the story.

We also examined question stems and discussed how different types of questions lead to different levels of thinking. Students learned that while some questions clarify basic understanding, others encourage deeper analysis, inference, and reflection. By intentionally using higher-level question stems, students were able to think more critically about characters, motivations, and events in the novel.

This strategy reinforced that asking thoughtful questions is an essential reading skill—one that builds curiosity, strengthens comprehension, and supports deeper cognitive engagement with complex texts.
