⭐ TEACHER FEATURE #7 ⭐
Mrs. Rogers | 6th Grade ELA | Build Background Knowledge
Students were preparing to write compare/contrast paragraphs about Christmas around the world. In order to pique their interest as described on page 35, students were given passages about Christmas traditions in different countries around the world. The passages were read whole group and text evidence questions were completed. Because our students have a limited understanding of cultures outside of our own, this strategy allowed these students to begin to develop a concept of other cultures and traditions. This does not take the strategy of the level to the mind map but scaffolds it down to the level of these students.

In addition to working with our PE classes, Mr. Kilpatrick also spoke with our D3 students about overcoming obstacles, refusing to say “I can’t,” and what it takes to run a successful small business. His message was both inspiring and empowering.
A huge thank you to Coach Kilpatrick and Coach Keeton for investing your time, sharing your expertise, and teaching our students a new skill. We are so grateful for your support!

Mrs. Wanamaker | 6th Grade Reading | Metaphors
I used activity 8, Metaphor, as an activity to go with “The Jacket” by Gary Soto. We created metaphors by comparing the main character, Gary, to ordinary items from the classroom. To prepare we discussed how metaphors find similarities between two unlike things. We also talked about the characteristics of the main character using the STEAL method.
As a class, we chose an item in the classroom to compare to our main character, Gary. This class chose a pencil. (Other classes chose a book, a painting, the flag and a pencil sharpener, all of which worked well!) We discussed as tables and as a whole class as we worked together to complete the first row of the chart .Students were SO excited to tell me other ideas and really loved the creative thinking involved in this activity!
