Each year during school counselor week, Arisa Health asks schools to nominate the school counselor they believe goes above and beyond for students both academically and in meeting their mental health needs. Each school in the central region covers six counties (from Little Rock-Clarksville) and has the opportunity to nominate their school counselor. Arisa Health then has the task of choosing one counselor from the elementary level and one from the secondary level across this region. Carl Stuart submitted a lot of nominations for Mrs. Franklin. Nominations were received from admin, teachers, and secretaries—all commenting on the great work she exhibits each day. Mrs. Franklin was chosen as Arisa's Mental Health Champion for this school year. Congratulation!!! #AscendToExcellence #celebratecsms

CSMS Black History Month 2025
Charity Adams Earley was the first African American woman to be an officer in the Women's Army Corps during World War II. She led the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, a group that helped deliver critical mail to soldiers, boosting their morale. After the war, Charity earned a master's degree and worked in education and community service. She dedicated much of her life to helping others, including founding a program to train African American leaders. Charity passed away on January 13, 2002, at age 83.
Crispus Attucks, a sailor of African and Indigenous descent, became the first casualty of the American Revolution when British soldiers shot and killed him during the Boston Massacre on March 5, 1770. His death made him a symbol of resistance and a martyr for the cause of liberty. Over time, abolitionists highlighted his sacrifice, and activists pushed for recognition, establishing March 5 as Crispus Attucks Day. Today, he is celebrated as a pivotal figure in America's fight for freedom.
Isabella Peterson was born on December 6, 1919, in Clemson, North Carolina. Orphaned at 12, she moved to Washington, D.C. with her siblings. After high school, she worked as a maid and postal clerk before joining the Women's Army Corps (WAC) in 1942. She served with the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only African American WAC unit to go overseas during WWII. In England and France, they cleared mail backlogs, boosting soldiers’ morale. After the war, Isabella married, had three children, and worked for the U.S. government. She retired in North Carolina and passed away in 2007.
In the early 1900s, the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP) fought for recognition and better working conditions for African American railroad workers, especially Pullman porters. Railroads had racial divisions, with Black workers in service roles like porters. The BSCP eventually won a contract with the Pullman Company in 1937, securing higher wages, job security, and rights for workers. This victory was not only a labor win but also a milestone in the fight for African American rights, inspiring broader social and economic progress for the Black community.
